Beyond Musical Text: Britten & Ovid’s Phaethon

Thursday 25th April, Leeds City Museum, 13:15-13:45

Jonathan Tobutt, a professional oboeist undertaking performance-based research, considered the relationship between a source text and an adaptation into a different medium by focusing on the example of Ovid’s story of Phaethon’s failure to control the horses drawing the Sun chariot of his father, Helios, and its portrayal by Benjamin Britten in a piece for solo oboe.

The talk includes an oboe recital in order to fully explore the effects of performance and tempi on the piece.
